Mary Lynn van Deventer teaches hammered dulcimer, french horn, and piano! Here's a few shots from our recent photoshoot! | Teaspoon of Nose

Photoshoot: Mary Lynn’s Music

While I do a lot of creating with gold foil, I also do custom work that branches a little beyond what usually shows up in my Etsy shop. Today, I want to share with you one of the projects I worked on this past spring with musician Mary Lynn van Deventer!

Mary Lynn is a fantastic music teacher as well as performer: in fact, she’s one of the most respected hammered dulcimer players in the U.S.! She’s also a dear friend and former music teacher of mine, so when she reached out needing some updated marketing materials, I was overjoyed to see what we could do together!

You know that moment when its 5 o’clock and you don’t know what to cook for dinner?

I hate those evenings. What in the world am I going to cook?

That moment happened to me. I knew we had shrimp, which meant there were some tasty options to choose from, but I hadn’t picked a recipe and was blanking in the moment.

On a whim, I decide to look up shrimp scampi, because who doesn’t love pasta and garlic  with their shrimp?

There's tons of things to do in your own house when the internet goes out. Here's 30 things to do without wifi! | Teaspoon of Nose

30 things you can do without wifi

Having the internet go out sucks. Being without it for days can be really rough! Here’s 30 things to do that don’t need an internet connection!

Oklahoma is known for tornadoes, but what I didn’t think about before we moved here is that those winds make regular appearances even if they don’t funnel into a cyclone. We had a stretch here when tornado-force winds hit our area every four days or so! Between that and the accompanying hail, there’s bound to be some property damage.

In spite of it being somewhat normalized, our small town don’t move quickly on repairs. We lost our wifi during one and were told that the earliest appointment available was nine days away! Oh, the joy of a small town.

Altus storms are no joke, and can knock the wifi out. Here's 30 things to do without wifi! | Teaspoon of Nose

Spend a few days in the idyllic town of Chinon in the Loire Valley- its the perfect way to relax!!

Relaxing in the Loire Valley

This post is part of our month-long European trip from last August. Check here for our whole trip!

Our stay in Chinon felt like a retreat into another era. Time slowed down, life got quieter. The biggest question we answered each day was, “where should we eat dinner?” The necessary logistics that go into a multi-stop trip faded as we relaxed.

Tucked away in the heart of the Loire Valley, Chinon is a tiny town in a region of small towns. Fields, vineyards, and dairy farms cover the landscape dotted with idyllic villages. When I asked a friend about the Loire Valley, she summed it up with “Wine and castles. That’s why you should go.” Yes, please.

The big event of Chinon was less an activity and more the place itself. We splurged and stayed in a castle! A château, to be exact. Chateau de Marcay is an old rambling property, complete with horses and a tree-lined entryway. From the lobby full of velvet couches to the attentive staff quick to address you by name, the hotel exudes a feeling of aged European grandeur.

Getting work done in the local coffeeshop!

Goals: June

Welcome to summer! Here in Oklahoma we’ve moved into the days of 90+ degree days already, so I don’t care what the official calendar says. We filled our long weekend with time with friends, lake time, and even got a surprise invitation to try out the C-17 flight simulator! That was incredibly cool. Now I can say I’ve flown a plane, right?
